”Reduction and space at the core―moving between improvisation and composition through drums + electronics.”

Akira Nakamura is a drummer, composer, and music producer from Okinawa, Japan. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, he began his professional career in the United States and has since worked internationally across Germany, China, and Japan. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Hiromi Uehara and David Fiuczynski, engaging with a wide range of contexts from jazz and pop to funk, classical, and experimental music. Alongside these collaborations, he has continuously developed his own compositional projects: in 2007 he founded the Okinawa-based band *element of the moment* (five album releases), and in 2009 he formed the *AKIRA NAKAMURA trickstewart band* in Tokyo, releasing two albums.

Through collaborations with classical musicians in Berlin, Nakamura deepened his focus on reduction and space, leading to the launch of his solo project **akira.drums** in 2023. His work blends acoustic drums and electronics with minimal melodies and subtle textures, centered on a minimal, rhythm-driven approach to composition and sound design. Drawing influence from both Western musical practices and Zen-inspired Japanese thought, he explores sound worlds where stillness and propulsion coexist.

Live performances take the form of fully improvised hybrid sets, using an acoustic drum kit expanded with triggers and effects. Each performance is shaped in real time in response to the space, the audience, and the energy of the moment―moving between stillness and motion, control and impulse―assembling a singular sense of time unique to the room.

In parallel with his artist practice, Nakamura has long remained engaged with local communities in Okinawa. He has composed two commissioned musical theatre works for the city, and has served as Festival Director for Jazz in Nanjo (organized by Nanjo City, since 2020) and NAHA-TO Jazz Month (Week) (organized by Naha City, since 2022). Through workshops and educational initiatives, he continues to create points of contact between music, community, and people.

Nakamura continues to evolve his expression through two complementary approaches: improvisation in performance and composition as structured works. Working across multiple roles―creator, performer, educator, and director―he keeps asking what music can mean, and what it can do, within society and the environments we share.
